Writing an Art Inspired Tone Poem (Online Class)
with JC Wayne
featuring Kari Ganoung Ruiz
Wednesday, April 14th, 5:00-7:00pm EST
A key foundational technique for creating an arresting painting is the value study - sketching out the darks, mid-tones and lights. What happens if we apply this technique to writing a "tone "poem, building from weighty depth to buoyant lightness? Join poet, JC Wayne, to explore creating this original poetic form she has conceived (officially, a "tone poem" is a specific type of musical composition). We will write our tone poem inspired by Gallery 46 artist, Kari Ganoung Ruiz's preparatory value sketch for Tangle and the finished painting. To support our writing, we'll explore examples of poems employing tone progression, do warm-up writing prompts, practice quick ways to use breathing, visualizing and sensory focus to activate our observational sensitivity to value and tone, and enjoy the opportunity to share our work with each other.
A special bonus: Our Gallery 46 muse artist, Kari - known for her beautifully luminescent and masterful interplays of light and dark - will be at the workshop to share her inspiration and process in creating Tangle and to answer your questions.
- Something to write with
- Something to write on
- Your explorer's creative spirit
